First Semester

Dear first semester students, dear new students,

We at AStA are very happy to welcome you to Göttingen!
Despite the current situation, we are trying to support you as best we can, even from afar, and to provide you with information that will make your start in Göttingen as pleasant as possible.
Your Fachschaftsrat or Fachgruppe will provide you with the most important information regarding your subject and the start of your first semester! In addition, you will be given first-semester bags in which you will find information material and helpful utensils that the student representatives and we have put together. To ensure that you are always up to date, we as the AStA are also present on various social media channels that you can follow.

You can also send us an email with your concerns at any time. We will be very happy to help you with problems, answer questions or direct you to the appropriate offices. However, there is already a collection of the central questions that have reached us in previous years. The FAQs can be found here.

Information booth and first-semester bag

During the O-Phase we will set up a booth on the Z-Campus, either in front of the Z-Mensa or in the ZHG near the glass box. The booth will be open from October 18 to 21 and from October 25 to 28 from 11 am to 3 pm. Here you can get information about the AStA and university politics, as well as various contributions from groups and initiatives in and around the university, so be sure to come by!
In addition, the AStA has put together bags for first-year students with various materials to help them get off to a successful start at university. You will find a Studi-Guide in your first-semester bag – a booklet in which we have compiled all the important information about studying and life on campus. From advice services offered by the university, to the use of semester tickets, to information about the Mensas and the libraries, there are many helpful tips in it! It’s definitely worth a look. Even for students who are already in higher semesters, there will be one or two new pieces of information! Get the booklet in English directly here as a PDF.

Effects of Covid-19 on university operations and on the orientation phase

Some teaching will be done in digital format due to the ongoing pandemic. The O-Phase will be supplemented by online events.

If you are currently in a stressful situation due to the Covid crisis, the Department of social affairs will help you, where you can also find further information on support services.

The University of Göttingen also provides a lot of information and help for your first semester in Göttingen. You can find this information here and of course you will also find up-to-date information about the current corona regulations.

In view of the dynamics of the pandemic, we would also like to point you to the Studentenwerk channels, where you can find important information as well!

In addition, the Studentenwerk offers a meal plan app that is really useful for normal university life. It can be found in the Google Play Store, App Store or Microsoft Store.

Campus Map & Virtual City Tour

Do you want to know where your faculty is located or where the SUB is, for example? With the help of the university map, you can find your way around the campus, at least virtually. You can find the link here. The university also offers an App for Android, so you can download the map directly to your smartphone.

In 2017, we developed a campus map that you can view here. Most of the points are still up to date, so you can get a good overview.

To explore the city, we recommend the new virtual city map, which allows you to experience digital city tours focused on the topics of your choice. This way you can find local cultural institutions, bars and important buildings in the city. This offer is new and will be continuously expanded by us.

Detailed information on study programme & subject?

Most students have a lot of questions about their subject even before they start their studies. Here, we as the AStA can only help to a limited extent. Due to the diversity of subjects, it is unfortunately not possible to provide you with professional advice. We are happy to help by referring you to the official advice centres or the respective Fachschaftsrat.
Before you start your studies, the faculties offer information days or orientation phases. Here you have the opportunity to get in touch with some lecturers and students from higher semesters and ask subject-specific questions. In addition, you will get to know your fellow students and make friends.

We look forward to seeing you!
Your AStA
